A Major Indoor Sports Complex Could Reshape Fort Myers’ City of Palms Park Area

The next chapter for the City of Palms Park area could bring a very different kind of game day to Fort Myers.

The former Boston Red Sox spring training home is part of a broader Midtown redevelopment effort. Earlier this year, the city commissioned Card & Associates to study possibilities for the property, including sports, housing and commercial uses.

What is being proposed?

According to Gulfshore Business’s September 18 report, council members favored exploring a 200,000-square-foot fieldhouse at their September 16 meeting. No formal approval vote was taken.

The concept includes indoor turf, multipurpose courts, a fitness center, spectator areas and concessions, with flexible space for tournaments and community entertainment.

The proposed fieldhouse would sit near Broadway and Hoople Street, across from the Skatium. Apartments above shops and restaurants are envisioned at Broadway and Edison Avenue, where the ballpark stands, with a linear park separating the two areas. Hotels and additional housing also appear in the broader concept.

What happens next?

The plans remain preliminary. Parking is a significant design challenge, and community workshops are planned to begin in October. A formal construction agreement is still pending.

For residents, the proposal could mean more places to play, gather and spend an afternoon in Midtown. For now, the renderings offer a look at what could happen, rather than a finalized project.
