This fall, the beloved waterfront eatery on San Carlos Island is making a comeback with a fresh identity and updated vibe. Now rebranded as Bonita Fish Co., the restaurant will occupy the historical wood-framed venue at 702 Fishermanโs Wharf โ a property HM Restaurant Group purchased for $5.5 million in January, joining their nearby Dixie Fish Co. and Doc Fordโs Rum Bar & Grille.
With roots dating back to 1926, when it first opened as Bonita Fish House, and later known as Bonita Billโs, the restaurant carries nearly a century of waterfront charm. Joe Harrity, HMโs operating partner, emphasized that though the space will feel renewed, its character and ambiance will remain intactย .
The renovated Bonita Fish Co. will offer seating for approximately 300 guests across indoor and outdoor areas. It will feature a new centerpiece bar, live entertainment every day, and a fresh menu with a strong focus on local seafood. Expect innovative dishes like smoked mullet and other coastal-inspired fare prepared in both indoor and outdoor smokersย .
Adjacent to the main restaurant, a dedicated event spaceโโBayside at Bonita Fish Co.โโwill host private functions, from weddings to corporate gatherings. Also in development is a floating dock marina with slips for boats up to 90 feet long and full amenities including electricity and water, expected by 2026ย .
Harrity highlighted that the revamp isnโt about erasing the past. Fans fondly recall the iconic elementsโlike the boat that once crashed into the dock and became an impromptu canvas for autographs after Hurricane Ianโwhich will be thoughtfully integrated or honored in the refreshed designย .
Tentatively scheduled to reopen in late 2025 (with an October target mentioned in some local news reports) (), Bonita Fish Co. is poised to relaunch as a revitalized destinationโmelding historic allure with modern seafood cuisine to welcome both long-time patrons and newcomers alike.
