Nearly four years after Hurricane Ian devastated Southwest Florida’s coastline, two long-awaited recovery projects are finally moving forward.
This week, the Lee Board of County Commissioners approved more than $13 million for beach, park and pier recovery projects, including repairs to Bonita Beach Park’s restroom facilities and continued progress toward rebuilding the Fort Myers Beach Pier.
Bonita Beach Park Restrooms Finally Set for Repair
For many Bonita Springs residents, the biggest news may be the return of permanent restrooms at Bonita Beach Park.
Since Hurricane Ian struck in September 2022, beachgoers have relied on temporary portable restrooms and limited shower facilities while waiting for repairs to begin. The loss of the restroom building has been one of the most noticeable reminders of the storm’s impact at on Bonita’s most popular beach.
The county has now awarded a construction contract for Bonita Beach Park, Bonita Beach Access #1, and Bonita Beach Access #10, also known as Little Hickory Island Beach Park.
According to Lee County Parks & Recreation, repairs will include:
- Restoration of the Bonita Beach Park restroom building
- Repairs to the county office building
- Boardwalk improvements
- Pavilion repairs
- New showers
- Landscaping enhancements
- Parking lot restoration
At Little Hickory Island Beach Park, the existing restroom building will be completely replaced.

Progress Continues on the Fort Myers Beach Pier
The funding package also advances the long-awaited Fort Myers Beach Pier project.
The iconic pier has remained closed since Hurricane Ian destroyed much of the structure in 2022 and has become one of the region’s most anticipated rebuilding efforts. The latest approvals include funding for engineering and construction administration services, representing another step toward bringing the landmark back to Fort Myers Beach.

Another Major Milestone in Southwest Florida’s Recovery
While construction timelines have not yet been announced, the approvals mark a significant milestone in the ongoing recovery of Southwest Florida’s public beaches and waterfront destinations.
For beachgoers who have spent years wondering when Bonita Beach’s restrooms would return—and when they might once again stroll out onto the Fort Myers Beach Pier – the answer finally appears to be getting closer.
