Florida may be famous for its sunshine, but when the sun dips below the Gulf, the shadows tell their own stories. From North Fort Myers and Cape Coral to Naples and Marco Island, Southwest Florida is filled with mysterious whispers, haunted landmarks, and a few too many “unexplained” happenings to ignore. Whether you’re a true believer or just love a good ghost story, here are some of the region’s eeriest spots to explore this Halloween.
Haunted Hotspots of Fort Myers
The Laboratory Theater of Florida
Housed in a 100-year-old former church, this Fort Myers theater is beloved for its bold performances — and its otherworldly cast members. Staff and visitors have reported seeing a mysterious female entity on the stairs, glowing orbs floating near the mezzanine, and doors that open or close on their own. Some even say the building’s “energy” changes right before showtime, as if someone unseen is taking their seat.
The Veranda Restaurant
Downtown Fort Myers’ Veranda is known for its fine dining and Southern charm, but regulars also whisper about the apparition of the Gonzalez family matriarch, seen drifting down the staircase or appearing in the upstairs windows. Staff have reported odd gusts of air and wine lists flying off tables when no one’s nearby — though some say she’s just checking in to make sure guests are being treated right.
Old Lee County Courthouse
Built in 1915, the historic courthouse hosted some of Florida’s earliest death penalty trials, and legend has it that two condemned murderers never truly left. Nighttime passersby claim to see shadows moving behind the upper windows or hear faint voices echoing through the halls after dark.
Ford’s Garage
You might expect the sounds of revving engines and clinking glasses at this Fort Myers classic — but not the disembodied voices or objects flying off shelves. Several employees have reported paranormal events they can’t explain, often after closing time.
Other Spooky Spots Worth a Visit
Cracker Barrel, Naples
In 1995, a tragic triple murder occurred at this Cracker Barrel — and ever since, employees have reported eerie happenings, from cold spots and flickering lights to unexplained whispers near the dining area. Many longtime locals still get chills just driving by.
Koreshan State Park (Estero)
Once home to a utopian cult led by Cyrus Teed, Koreshan is serene by day — but downright spooky by night. Visitors have seen a “lady in white” gliding along the trails or vanishing into the woods. The empty historic buildings still echo with the dreams (and maybe the spirits) of their long-gone residents.
Downtown Fort Myers Ghost Walk
The brick-lined streets of downtown have stories that refuse to fade. From the Old Courthouse to hidden alleyways and old hotels, ghost tours regularly pick up strange images and orbs in photos. Whether it’s history or hauntings, something definitely lingers after dark.
Ghosts by the Gulf
Marco Island’s Olde Marco Inn
This charming island getaway hides a tragic love story: A couple checked in more than a century ago and — according to legend — never checked out. Guests have reported unseen footsteps, moving chairs, and a presence that still watches over the rooms.
Marco Island Cemetery
Peaceful by day, but locals say that at night, you might glimpse shadowy figures or feel a cold hand on your shoulder. The site became a paranormal hot spot after the unsolved deaths of two girls in the 1970s.
The Sunshine State’s Shadow Side
Even paradise has its ghosts — and Southwest Florida’s are as restless as they are fascinating. Whether you’re enjoying dinner at The Veranda, catching a show at The Lab Theater, or strolling past the courthouse after dark, remember: not all the locals are living.
So this Halloween, grab a flashlight, keep your camera ready, and explore the eerie side of the coast. Just don’t be surprised if something… or someone… follows you home.
Happy Haunting, Southwest Florida.
